Reflection
Kaplan Reflection:
I learned that with the technology today it might be possible for scientists to discover habitable moons such as Pandora. In creating an avatar like the Na'vi, technology is not quite there and scientists have not discovered the tools yet to do so, but maybe in the future there is a possibility in creating a human with genetic DNA by going under a machine as shown in the film. I also learned that even though human life on Pandora is impossible due to the gases present that the relationship between the Na'vi and humans is very similar because both worlds use the environment for water, food, and other resources. When beginning the project both I thought that there were almost no similarities with the humans and the Na'vi, but the more we researched the more similarities we found. Both groups are able to display emotion and are able to connect with each other especially with their families. Even some of the physical attributes are the same, for example: both groups have two legs, two arms, hair, etc. Students can learn a great deal from this film especially from the planet Pandora and how it differentiates from Earth. Pandora's atmosphere is made from different types of elements then Earth making it physically impossible for humans to live since one of the elements is a toxic gas.
Pollner Reflection:
Throughout project, I learned a great deal about the in-depth features of James Cameron's Avatar. In addition, I learned about web-design and its proper citations and functions. The project proved to be a challenge, but I was able to enjoy the process, especially once the web-design process commenced. In the first two research papers, I investigated the background information, fictional elements, and science references in relation to the film. It was important to explore the science elements that Cameron and his team used in order to create the film.
Particularly in the film, science was evident in Pandora's atmosphere, Pandora's nature and forests, the human's compound, and the human technology used to created each Avatar. Pandora's atmosphere included Earth-like substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, but also poisonous gases that Earth's atmosphere does not contain. To be able to find life on the planet and to allow human presence to be possible (with sun, temperature, and water), the film ties in many science concepts. Pandora's nature functions through a large system referred to as Eywa. Eywa communicates to the plants and animals of Pandora has a bio-luminescent ability that allows each plant to light up at night. Although this science concept is yet to be discovered in reality, Avatar's ability to use real and fictional elements to create Eywa is revolutionary. The technology in which humans thrive off of in Pandora proves vital to their survival and infiltration of the Na'vi community. Without the technology of the Avatar program, oxygen masks, space ships, holographic maps, and war machines, human survival on Pandora would not be able to exist. The science that is required for a Planet that seems so similar to Earth's is astounding and would possibly be used in the future. For now, these elements remain (science) fictional.
Science fiction can portray elements that foreshadow the future and can explain science's importance. Since the film takes place in the year 2154, advanced technology is used to portray mind boggling machines that truly relate to the future society. I find that science fiction relates to every day life in many ways, especially in technology aspects. Although fictional, science fiction movies provide an outline to very many possibilities for the future of life and science. For example, small cell phones and tiny computer chips were once portrayed in science fiction movies as advanced, and now those technological elements are used in every day life. Science fiction can be used to teach, explain, and imagine science and its future. In this project, I unanimously learned about Avatar, science, science fiction, and web-design.
